Petition for the release of Jafar Panahi

We, the undersigned, call for the immediate and unconditional release of nationally and internationally recognized Iranian film maker, Jafar Panahi.

Jafar Panahi (جعفر پناهی) has won top prizes at the Venice, Cannes, Berlin and Chicago film festivals, most notably for the award-winning film Circle. Through his films and his influence he has given voice to many of his fellow Iranians and has always courageously defended their human rights.

Panahi was arrested by Iranian security forces at his home on Monday night, 1 March 2010, together with his wife, daughter (the inspiration behind the film Offside), and 15 guests. Panahi's wife and their daughter were among the 14 released late on Wednesday, 3 March 2010, but Panahi and two of his guests, Mohammad Rassoulof and Mehdi Pourmoussa, are still being held.

No reasons have been given behind his arrest, and the only claim made thus far is that this was not a politically motivated arrest by the government (government prosecutor, Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi, 2nd March 2010)

We, the undersigned, dispute this claim as Jafar Panahi was a vocal critic of the previous and current administration. He was previously targeted for attending the public memorial for Neda Agha-Soltan, shot in July 2009. He was barred from travelling to attend the Berlin Film Festival in February 2010.

We, the undersigned, view his arrest in light of his influence as a filmmaker struggling for the liberation of conscience in a state that has long relied on the overwhelming use of authoritarian power.

Jafar Panahi, among other renowned artists, is paying a terrible price for courageously voicing out the people’s will in a time where few avenues are available. We would like this unlawful and unjust treatment to be stopped.

Idealen

Ben ik naïf? Jazeker. Maar er zijn een aantal dingen die ik graag zou willen veranderen. En radicaal.
1) Om te beginnen wil ik de zorgverzekering afschaffen. Gratis medische zorg is veel goedkoper dan de Agis, Ohra, VGZ en al die andere andere nietszeggende namen. Misschien krijg je 5 procent fraude, maar je bespaart 30 procent administratiekosten (duizenden administratieve banen in Apeldoorn etc).
2) Laten wij gewoon kiezen voor gratis openbaar vervoer. Het zou veel goedkoper zijn als men geen OV chipkaart moet maken en kraken.
3) Legaliseer alle drugs. Kweek zelf hash in Holland en koop alle heroïne op uit Afghanistan. Veel goedkoper dan al die soldaten, veel goedkoper dan oorlog met de Taliban. En ook veel goedkoper dan de misdaad in Nederland.
4) Ga voor groene energie - kernenergie!
5) Brom-/snorfietsen met gele en blauwe kentekens op de weg. Een slooppremie voor 2-takt tweewielers en subsidie op zuinige 4-takt en electrische scooters.
6) Alle scholen moeten openbare scholen zijn. Geen religieuze scholen - protestants, katholiek, islamitisch of joods. Ontdek religie in maatschappijleer.

Waar is de wethouder van onderwijs?

Waar is de wethouder van onderwijs? Eerst laat hij Ahmed Marcouch de MBO problemen oppakken en er mee aan de haal gaan. Daarna brengt hij basisschool kinderen in groep acht in de problemen door niet voor genoeg goede plaatsen op middelbare scholen te zorgen.

Vandaag in de krant nog twee struikelblokken: Restaurant 15 zou eigenlijk Restaurant 12 moeten heten, gezien het niet mogelijk is met de huidige gemeentelijke bureaucratie om genoeg kandidaten te vinden om chef de woorden onder leiding van Jamie Oliver. Ten tweede krijgt Amsterdam een eervolle vermelding als bezitter van de allerslechtste Pabo in het ganze land.

Terwijl onze wethouder van onderwijs alle leuke feestjes in de stad afloopt op zoek naar stemmen, blijft de onderwijs portefeuille onbewaakt.

Kinderen die na de middelbare school willen, krijgen nog steeds oneerlijke concurrentie van kinderen buiten de stad. Ondanks beloftes van Asscher en de OSVO, hebben veel kinderen in de randgemeenten voorrang bij scholen in buurtgemeenten terwijl kinderen in Amsterdam achter het net vissen. Kinderen hier hebben geen enkele voorrang, ook doordat een onevenredig deel van de plaatsen op een goede school gebruikt worden door kinderen van buitenaf. Natuurlijk heeft Amsterdam een regio functie, maar zorg er dan wel voor dat je genoeg plaatsen hebt om een regio functie te vervullen.

Het zou ook onze wethouder van onderwijs sieren als hij evenveel kansen zou bieden aan slimme kinderen uit onze achterstandsbuurten als kinderen uit Monnikendam en Uithoorn. Misschien kan Achmed Marcouch beter de problemen van de kernprocedure aanpakken.

Apple can't do 'Rithmetic

It's very strange how major companies work sometimes. It can also give an interesting glimpse of their mentality and attitude to customers.

For instance... take Apple. A nice friendly company, you would think. BUt it isn't always easy. I wanted to buy "Quicktime Pro" - video software for the PC from Apple. You can click on a link in the free version and it takes you to a site offering it for £20. So you try to buy but then it turns out you're in Holland and then it's €30. Not sure how they work that out, because £20 is €23. The €30 also includies Irish VAT. Now that is weird: it should actually be including Dutch VAT, as it is purchased from a Dutch site.

Another interesting Apple anomaly: if you give a Dutch address for the Apple store then you will only be able to use the store in Dutch. All descriptions of software are also in Dutch and you only have to hope the software itself will be in English. In Germany, the site is only German. But in Belgium or Switzerland you can choose a language and English is okay too. But that is on the side.

Back to Quicktime. So you want to buy it from the Dutch site including Dutch VAT (or none at all if you are a business) and to pay using the standard (and relatively safe) Dutch internet banking system: iDeal. But no. You can only pay with a credit card. Strange and inefficient as far as I am concerned. Any contacts with Apple are met with a polite but firm rebuttal. "We only sell it for this price and including Irish VAT. You can write and ask for the VAT back. Sorry, the Apple Store in Holland is only available in Dutch."

You suddenly start to get a glimpse of what life is like in Appleville. You have no choice, so Apple call the tricks. No company would dare be so haughty in PC land. There's too much competition. Long live the competition.
