Air Display?

The wonders of Apple and iTunes. The company (it is one, right?) profits from confusing customers. You complain to Apple and they blame iTunes and vice versa. Bit they can also take it a step further and blame anyone else in range. Sounds like Catch 22.
It's just happened again. I bought "Air Display" by Avatron on 8 July. I played with it and unfortunately discovered it was not able to play an .avi file from a PC on the iPad as secondary monitor. Not only that, the PC display stayed messed up even when Air Display wasn't running. There was suddenly a whole area of invisible virtual desktop (lost mouse, strange remote display).
I tried posting to the Avatron forum, but the relevant technical forum is read-only (?). So I contacted Avatron and they offered a couple of suggestions that were not able to solve the problem. All I ended up with was a bland "No, this is not a known issue. We'll certainly look into this and see if we can reproduce the issue."
So today I ended up contacting iTunes. But they referred me back to Avatron because it was a technical problem. So I asked Avatron for a refund, but Avatron replied "If you'd like to pursue a refund you'll need to contact Apple." But as soon as I tried to return to the relevant iTunes link I was informed "U hebt al een probleem gemeld met dit artikel, of het is te oud om te melden." No idea why Apple still insists on addressing me in Dutch to inform me that I had already reported a problem, but that's obviously Catch 23.
Or course writing this blog costs a lot more than €7.99, but that seems to be the Apple strategy to stop complaints. Make it more expensive to complain than to shrug your shoulders and put up with it.

Tarantella

Apple for Tutor

AutoStrade remain an interesting phenomenon in Italy.  The motorway network is huge. It also remains a source of amusement, irritation and occasional incomprehension.

In one of the most beautiful countries on earth, with a great tradition of design, the motorways are  incredibly ugly and illogical. As soon as you cross the border, you have to pay a nominal two-euro fee for the first few miles. As soon as you reach Milan, you are repeatedly informed that the only way to Bologna is to stay in the outside (far left) lane. Until you have circumvented the whole of Milan only to discover that all three lanes of the motorway go to Bologna. Why are there no international agreements on signposting? And do the Italians really think it’s easy to read such a vast number of signs if you also have some in white on blue, some in white on green and the rest in black on white?
Then you discover that the whole length of motorway from Milan to Rimini has now been fitted with that wonderful invention “Tutor”, i.e., your average speed is metered all the way and your GPS tends to bleep continuously if you touch 130.

I have also discovered the disadvantages of such a speed-control system. One percent is content to pootle along at 100 in the inside lane. There are still some that try to race at 200 km/hr in the outside lane but 90% chugs along at 127 km/hr in the middle lane, with occasional attempts to overtake at 131 km/hr. So the inside lane is empty, the middle lane is always blocked and the outside lane is very dangerous with some cars trying to do 200 and others 130.

I couldn’t believe that was the intention of the project until we reached Bologna, where it became apparent that the inside lane was apparently permanently closed, to prevent people blocking the middle lane, I suppose, because now there wasn’t one.

I still wonder who those are that race at 200. Do they know the system doesn’t work? Are they police offers or Mafia who can bribe the Tutor?

Alerts to Year 2011 Threats in Europe

BY JOHN CLEESE

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose."

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia , meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is canceled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

Taxi?

Taxi? Zittend ziekenvervoer?* Veevervoer?

I am me

  • "Unfortunately, it is not possible to combine two accounts or to merge data."
  • "In most cases, it's not possible to move products from one Google Account to another."
  • "If your current YouTube account is linked to a Google Account, it may be possible to transfer your YouTube account depending on when it was created. Some settings will be available to you and, unfortunately, some may not."
I am me and, first and foremost in an internet sense, I am me on Google. I am not Mobile Me with Apple... but I do have a problem - conflicting accounts. I have a name and that is also my email address. I don't want another email address, but will apparently have to get myself one if, for instance, I want to keep using Picasa. My Google Apps account is obviously Google and my Picasaweb account is also Google, but they are actually different accounts, connected to one and the same email address. I now only notice the problem with my Google Docs... Depending on which URL I use, I get to see my Google Apps documents or my Google Docs.
But what to do with Picasa? I have 80 GB of photo storage available and that space is now accessible under my name and the email address I use for all my mail, but that will apparently have to change. Why can't I just move everything to my Apps account, I hear you ask?  Because Google says I can't.
I have no idea why I can't just merge the two account. I just want all my docs, photos and videos from both accounts in one place.  I pay for storage under my email address, and want to keep using it there. Please sort out the mess, Google!

Containerdorp

Is the problem solved?

Sometimes I despair of technology and bureaucracy, certainly in combination. My wife has cancer and things are looking bleak, but in the last year she has been sent from one department to another in Amsterdam’s large academic hospital, the VUmc. It took them more than a year to discover that her cancer was back. By then, much too late, she decided to return to Amsterdam’s National Cancer Institute (AvL/NKI) for further treatment. However that is not always an easy thing to do, certainly when CT, PET and MRI scans are involved along with the relevant equipment produced by Siemens - using Sectra software at the VUmc and using Carestream at the AvL.
Repeatedly in the last few weeks we’ve been informed by one doctor after another at the AvL that they cannot peruse the scans they had received from the VUmc. These were the scans made while she was still attending the old hospital, and that are needed now to compare the state of the cancer now  in January and back then in October/November. So today we took another CD along with us and gave it to the radiology department at the AvL. However the AvL radiologist made it clear he was not going to look at the images on the scan because he couldn’t read them into his system. He could have looked at them using the viewer software provided on the CD, but this is second best. By making a nuisance of ourselves, we managed to find out that two major hospitals in Amsterdam – the AvL/NKI and the neighbouring Slotervaart Hospital are both unable to use CDs of scans sent by the VUmc. And vice versa. This has been going on since November, but the problem has still not yet been solved. Apparently Sectra has decided to wait for the next major release of their software before fixing this bug. But if the problem can't be solved on the spot, then think up a workaround. For instance, use the old Radworks (by GE Healthcare) to burn the CDs.

Marsh Award

Letters? No. I never get letters! Just before Christmas. It was a delightful shock. I was nominated for the Marsh Award for Children’s Literature in Translation. And now I won!

I got the invitation on Christmas Eve and read on the net that The Marsh Award “was founded to highlight the exciting books made accessible to young people in the UK through their encounters with works in translation”. I fully support the aims of the foundation in setting up this award.

It’s such a pity that so many in the English-speaking world know so little about the other languages and cultures. I have spent most of my working life making subtitles in English for Dutch films. That is also how I first came in contact with Toon Tellegen – subtitling an animated TV series of his stories.

I have always been convinced that film, spoken language and subtitling are an excellent cocktail to allow people to get inside a different culture. I think that is also why so many Dutch people, even young ones speak such good English. So I’d like to thank Jan Willem Looze of OJTV for introducing me to the work of Toon Tellegen

I would also like to thank David Bennett and Frances Elks of Boxer Books for the faith they put in me. The road was occasionally strewn with rocks. I would also like to thank my wife and children for listening to me and of course Toon Tellegen for writing such delightfully zany stories and Jessica Alhberg for illustrating them so wonderfully.

So anyway – I got a letter on Christmas Eve. A translator’s dream.
